Choose a community story

Real barriers. Respectful information. Practical next steps.

Explore how public environmental information can become more useful for rural, marginalized, and underrepresented communities without profiling people or collecting private health information.

      Land · Water · Work · Culture

When livelihoods and environmental change meet.

Fishing, farming, planting, hunting, and outdoor recreation support traditions, food systems, and local spending. Growth and environmental pressures also create real tradeoffs. Ambassadors learn to examine the evidence without choosing sides for a community.

SOURCE-SMART LEARNING: Dates and geography matter. Statewide economic figures are not Brunswick County totals, and contested fisheries questions must be presented fairly.
      ⚓
      Coastal + estuarine fishing

Food, jobs, tourism, and nursery waters

A 2021 NC Sea Grant study estimated North Carolina’s wild-caught commercial seafood industry supported about 5,500 jobs and nearly $300 million in statewide economic contribution. That is a statewide estimate, not Brunswick County’s share.

Question to exploreHow can communities protect fishing livelihoods while examining fish populations, bycatch, habitat, water quality, and changing management rules?

      🌾
      Farming + planting

Local food, working lands, and growth

Explore how farming, planting, and land-use decisions connect food systems, working lands, wetlands, roads, water, and emergency access. Before making a local claim, check current county and agricultural records.

Question to exploreWhat should be measured before working land changes use, and how can farms prepare for flooding, drought, erosion, and stronger storms?

      🦌
      Hunting + outdoor recreation

      Access, conservation, and rural spending

Research summarized by NC Sea Grant estimated recreation across North Carolina Wildlife Management Areas generated about $140 million in annual value added. The estimate covers WMA recreation statewide, not hunting alone or Brunswick County alone.

Question to exploreHow do hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, boating, and hiking contribute differently to habitat, recreation access, public safety, and rural businesses?

      🏘️
      Growth + quality of life

      Benefits and pressures can coexist

Visitor spending and residential growth can support jobs and businesses while increasing pressure on housing, traffic, infrastructure, wetlands, forests, farms, and culturally important places. The Navigator should show multiple perspectives and clearly label what is measured.

Evidence checkSeparate visitor spending, jobs, GDP/value added, tax revenue, household income, and quality-of-life opinions. They are not interchangeable.

Gullah Geechee living heritage + environmental justice

Culture is living. Land and water carry more than economic value.

Across Gullah Geechee communities, fishing, farming, seasonal foodways, and access to family land have supported food security and cultural continuity. Brunswick County is part of the northern North Carolina section of the federally designated Corridor, but local experiences vary and should be learned from local community voices rather than assumed.

      Local environmental-justice record

EPA identifies the former Kerr-McGee wood-treatment property in Navassa as a Brunswick County Superfund site with ongoing cleanup and revitalization work. The Navigator can teach Ambassadors how to read EPA records, dates, cleanup units, public-comment notices, and reuse plans—without equating Navassa or Gullah Geechee identity with contamination.

Water + accessCast-net fishing and seafood traditions are documented across the Corridor. Community leaders have raised concerns about changing fisheries, pollution, private docks, storm debris, and loss of traditional landings. These are attributed regional concerns, not proven conditions for every Brunswick community.
Rice landscapes + Eagles IslandUNCW and PBS NC report archaeological evidence of canals, floodgates, landings, and other rice-related water-control features on northern Eagles Island, which crosses Brunswick and New Hanover counties.
Climate + working landsUSDA explains that saltwater intrusion can reduce crop yields and working-land profitability in coastal areas. A Brunswick-specific loss should not be claimed without local evidence.
Heirs’ property + developmentHeirs’ property can create legal and economic vulnerability across Gullah Geechee communities. The Navigator may explain general resources, but must not assume a family’s title status or provide legal advice.
Community authority comes firstDo not ask youth to prove identity. Do not collect ancestry, family title records, oral histories, burial locations, fishing spots, gathering sites, or sacred knowledge. Obtain separate permission before recording stories, images, cultural work, or locations.
